WASHINGTON (TND) — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Wednesday announced she had filed article of impeachment against two Supreme Court justices.
The representativethreatened such a move earlier this month following a ruling by the high court that former presidents retain some immunity from prosecution after leaving office. The decision has significant implications on the 2020 election interference case against former President Donald Trump.
In a statement,AOC accused the court of “unchecked corruption.”
The unchecked corruption crisis on the Supreme Court has now spiraled into a Constitutional crisis threatening American democracy writ large,” she said. “Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito’s pattern of refusal to recuse from consequential matters before the court in which they hold widely documented financial and personal entanglements constitutes a grave threat to American rule of law, the integrity of our democracy, and one of the clearest cases for which the tool of impeachment was designed.”The first filing accuses Justice Clarence Thomas of failing to disclose income and a conflict of interest in his wife’s legal affairs. Another accuses Justice Samuel Alito of personal bias in his rulings and failure to disclose income.
Fellow 'Squad' members Reps. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., are all co-sponsoring the move.
“Justice Thomas and Alito’s repeated failure over decades to disclose that they received millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court is explicitly against the law,” Rep. Ocasio-Cortez continued. “And their refusal to recuse from the specific matters and cases before the court in which their benefactors and spouses are implicated represents nothing less than a constitutional crisis. These failures alone would amount to a deep transgression worthy of standard removal in any lower court, and would disqualify any nominee to the highest court from confirmation in the first place.”
Justice Alito was appointed by former President George W. Bush. Justice Thomas was appointed by former President George H. W. Bush.
